I specialise in spinal cord injury litigation and am Head of Brethertons’ dedicated Spinal Injury Team. I’ve worked in personal injury litigation since 1996. I now specialise in spinal cord injury claims. I am proud to be a Fellow of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL). The essence of my work is to help customers with complete and incomplete spinal cord injuries to move on with their lives following injury. As specialists, we know our field. We understand that you are frightened, worried about your future and unsure of what to do next. You may want to look into claiming compensation for your injuries to fund the care and adaptations you will need to support you in the next phase of your life, and we can support you through this process. There are very few lawyers in the country who are genuinely experienced in dealing with complex spinal cord injury compensation claims. These highly specialised claims require a very broad range of skills, knowledge and experience and, just as there are many specialisms within the medical environment, so too are there in the legal profession. Engaging with lawyers can often seem a daunting prospect. It need not be. At Brethertons we pride ourselves on our approachability and on understanding the needs of the people who approach us for help. We strive for unobtrusive professionalism. We hope you see it as personable understanding. My background is in representing claimants in high value serious injury claims and in group actions. Having assisted with the British Coal Respiratory Disease Litigation (then the largest group action in legal history) and other group actions, I was the Court appointed lead solicitor in the Gerona Air Crash Group Litigation (Akehurst & Others v Thomson Holidays Ltd). This was the first (and remains the only) case in which passengers injured in an air accident recovered compensation for psychiatric injuries. I’m passionate about helping people to access the compensation they deserve. I am really proud to have secured eight figure settlement sums for tetraplegic clients - some of the highest awards of compensation to individuals in UK legal history. I helped one particular customer to secure over 40 times what had previously been estimated by another advisor. I’m fully immersed in this specialist field, having lectured widely on various aspects of the law, practice and procedure. I’ve written articles published in the New Law Journal, the Personal Injury Law Journal, and the International Travel Law Journal and have contributed to various TV and radio programmes. Aside from the formal legal advice and assistance we offer, we are committed to helping people who have spinal cord injuries in any way we can. Often that is informal, and if we cannot help you ourselves we feel sure we will be able to put you in touch with someone who can. You can follow me on Twitter at @JonReesTweets.
